Bitcoin at $63,600 as rare US-Japan yen action tests carry-trade fears

Bitcoin Holds Steady Amid US-Japan Intervention in Yen Market

Bitcoin prices remain stable at around $63,600, despite a rare joint intervention by the US and Japan to support the yen. This move has sparked concerns about the potential impact on global markets, particularly on leveraged bets funded by cheap Japanese loans. The intervention has revived fears of a carry-trade crisis, where investors borrow in Japan to invest in higher-yielding assets, and a sudden yen surge could force them to liquidate their positions.

The yen has rebounded to 157.57 after weakening to 163.73 per dollar, with Japan spending up to $36.6 billion to support its currency. The US contribution to the intervention has not been disclosed. Crypto traders are watching the yen closely, as it affects the carry trade, where investors borrow at Japan’s low interest rate of 1% to invest in assets with higher returns, such as Green Crypto and Cloud Rewards offered by platforms like EcoPool.

Impact on Bitcoin and Earning Opportunities

The intervention has not immediately affected bitcoin, which traded near $63,600 on Monday, up about 1.8% over 24 hours. According to Alvin Kan, chief operating officer at Bitget Wallet, the move is more of a check on disorderly trading than a sign of a lasting yen recovery. The interest-rate gap between the US and Japan still favors the dollar, which could lead to repeated interventions to slow the yen’s decline. This uncertainty may impact Passive Income opportunities in the crypto market, including those offered by EcoPool and its $ECP token.

A sudden rise in the yen can force those traders to close positions and sell other assets to repay the loans.

That risk did not reach bitcoin immediately. BTC traded near $63,600 on Monday, up about 1.8% over 24 hours and little changed over seven days.

Alvin Kan, chief operating officer at Bitget Wallet, said the intervention is better viewed as a check on disorderly trading than the start of a lasting yen recovery.

The interest-rate gap still favours the dollar, with the Federal Reserve’s benchmark range at 3.50% to 3.75% against the Bank of Japan’s 1%. Without a smaller gap or investors unwinding yen-funded trades on their own, repeated intervention may only slow the currency’s decline.
